Early in the month, Mercury goes “cazimi,” an astrological term meaning “into the heart of the Sun.” When this aspect occurs, Mercury is infused with light, allowing previously scattered thoughts to become clear.
On August 11, Mercury enters the sign of logical and rational Virgo. Use this opportunity to analyze with discernment (svadhyaya, or self-study) and be more inwardly reflective instead of chasing perfection. Focus on appreciating the process rather than fixating on the result. On August 16, connection-loving Venus enters its ruling sign of Libra, symbolized by scales. This movement asks: How are you creating balance in your relationships and emotional life?
On the 22nd, the full moon in Aquarius echoes the full moon in July—when two consecutive full moons happen in one solar month, a rare blue moon occurs. It’s fitting that the blue moon is in this sign, as we are still collectively transitioning into the idealistic, forward-thinking Age of Aquarius. Embrace the practice of sakshi (witness) to strengthen your inner observer in this time of growth. Ask yourself: “What do I want to work toward? How can I use my gifts to authentically benefit my community?” This could mean sharing your resources, offering donations, or volunteering your time. Use your newfound knowledge to move forward into action.
Key planetary dates
August 1: Mercury goes “cazimi,” meaning “into the heart of the Sun.” Mercury is the planet that represents thought and the Sun represents the heart. Mercury is the closest planet to the sun and at times it forgets it is not the sun. This is a lesson in finding remembrance in the allowance of the heart rather than letting our thoughts to be the center of our lives.
August 2: From the 2nd to the 6th, the sun and Mercury are at odds (in opposition) with Saturn and in a tense relationship with the planet Uranus. From a physiological perspective, tending to the nervous system and the cardiovascular system is emphasized during this time. Ask yourself, how is my breath and circulation, how can I allow my body to be unrestricted and even strengthened? During this time, consider working with a Kundalini Yoga practice as a way to support yourself through this process.
August 8: The new moon in Leo continues the theme of uncovering what’s in your heart. New moons are an ideal time to plant seeds—what seed lies in your heart, and how can you find ways to access the inner chambers? Leo is the sign of the zodiac that represents our vital force, so during this time, place an emphasis on caring for the energy and spirit that lives within all of us.
August 11: The swift planet Mercury moves into its home sign of Virgo. As ruler of the digestive tract, taking time to focus on the gut during this transit is important. Remember, the majority of the immune system exists in the gut. Simplifying the amount of information we have to process in our thoughts creates more space for ourselves to digest information in our bodies. Try this practice to assist in this process.
August 16: The artful planet of Venus enters its home sign of Libra. When Venus goes into Libra, it has the ability to express itself in full force. In the past during meditations on Venus in Libra, I was shown elaborate mandalas. In Sanskrit, mandala simply means “circle,” but from a metaphysical lens, a mandala assists one in harmonizing the mundane mind into the enlightened mind.
August 19: Uranus stations to go retrograde, inviting the collective to review how we use technology and personal innovation to create and sustain resources in a way that brings more efficiency in our lives. What can we do in the digital space to advocate for changes that actually influence things on the ground?
August 22: The full moon is in Aquarius for the second consecutive time, again asking for us to heed the call of tuning into our personal genius that is in assistance to the collective. The full moon is at the last degree of Aquarius, signifying an opportunity to bring to an end repressive thought patterns that have conditioned us to experience life from a less than whole state.
Also on this day, the Sun enters Virgo on the heels of the full moon. Virgo shows us more about the process of perfecting, which is different from “perfection.” Perfection is often an idea we project out in life, whereas perfecting is an active process.
August 30: The swift planet Mercury enters the sign that pursues harmony, Libra. Mercury rules over information and thoughts, and the sign of Libra can bring extremes. During this transit, it is imperative to not allow your thoughts to swing to extremes as much as the information being presented to you may.
