Back pain is one of the most common of ailments, and yoga asanas are gaining wide acceptance as both a preventive measure and, depending on the injury, a therapeutic modality. This hour-long presentation is generously packed with nearly two dozen yoga asanas and asana-based exercises. The program begins with several exercises that work on different aspects of standing alignment in Tadasana (Mountain Pose). This lays the foundation for most of what follows—primarily simple but effective back- and belly-strengthening exercises, hip and groin openers that free the pelvis, and reclining exercises designed to restore and maintain the spine’s natural lumbar curve and open the chest.
Rumbaugh, a certified Anusara teacher, and her assistant do a stellar job of demonstrating for beginners and more experienced students. If practiced regularly, the exercises here—enlivened with Rumbaugh’s heartfelt words—will certainly help keep a healthy back healthy and, applied intelligently, should help relieve mild back discomfort from, say, lower-back stiffness after a day sitting at a desk. For more serious pain, an experienced teacher or therapist is recommended. But for that little “ouch!” in your lower back, this program is an excellent choice.
