When you’ve finally made the leap to put yourself out there and film video and still photos, it can be tempting to put all of your focus on the content you’re creating—and consider your wardrobe, hair, and makeup an afterthought.
Yet like it or not, how you look when you’re filmed can make a big difference when it comes to the quality of the final product and number of new followers you reach. The good news is that with just a handful of all-natural products and application tips, you can look like you’ve hired a pro even when you DIY.
Here are my 10 favorite eco-beauty products to help you get a no-makeup look that’ll leave you feeling fresh-faced and polished, plus advice for using them.
10 Best Natural Makeup Products
Best Eco-Beauty Product No. 1: Juice Beauty CC Cream
I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: This is my all-time favorite moisturizer-foundation-sunscreen product because its ingredients are so pure, it’s like leaving a treatment for your complexion on your skin all day. It doesn’t contain any dimethicone, which is a silicone that’s popular in many “clean” beauty products. What’s more, it doesn’t leave a shiny film on the face like so many other foundations, BB creams, and CC creams. This one is lightly tinted with a mineral so it evens out the skin tone without looking like a mask. Bonus: If you’re shooting outside, the SPF 30 provides a physical sunscreen that’ll keep you safe in the sun
Best Eco-Beauty Product No. 2 + No. 3: Jane Iredale Beyond Matte Powder + Jane Iredale PurePressed Powder
If you’ll be practicing yoga during your shoot, there’s a good chance you’ll sweat a little—which will cause your skin to get a bit shiny. I love the Beyond Matte Powder because it is specifically designed to take away shine without adding any foundation coverage—ideal if you’re going for the no-makeup makeup look and you are blessed with a clear complexion. If you have acne scars, redness, spots, pimples, or are simply looking for more coverage, the pressed or loose Jane Iredale foundation powders are great.
Insider application tips: I mist my clients’ skin with Josh Rosebrook Hydrating Accelorator, which will set the Jane Iredale mineral powders so they stay in place . I also recommend you invest in a good Kabuki brush. One of my fave cruelty-free brushes is the Kabuki Brush by Lilylolo. Finally, if you’re applying powder after sweating, blot any moisture with a tissue and then sweep your face with powder.
Best Eco-Beauty Product No. 4: Lily Lolo Sculpt and Glow Contour Duo Bronzer
After applying CC cream and powder, your complexion may look a little flat. Lily Lolo Sculpt and Glow Contour Duo creates a flawless contoured look, casting your features in their best light. This natural makeup duo contains the Lily Lolo bronzer, which makes contouring easy, and a light-reflecting highlighter that can be used sparingly for a subtle glow. I love this product as it works with all skin types, including dry, mature, blemish-prone, combination, and normal skin.
Insider application tips: When applying bronzer for contouring your face, think of the Es and 3s: Make an “E” on the left side of your face and a “3” on the right, starting at your forehead, going to the hollow of your cheek bones (apples of cheeks are kept free for blush and a bit of highlighter), and along your jaw bone. When you do this, it’s crucial to use a bronzer brush so you can control where the color lands. Then, go over your entire face with the Kabuki brush to even it all out.
Best Eco-Beauty Product No. 5: 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Blush
The thing about blush is there is no one color that suits all. I love this brand because it offers a range of fruit-pigmented color, which you’ll want to choose based on your skin tone, the time of year, your outfit colors, and even current beauty trends. If you want a natural look, I find that going with a semi-matte blush is your best bet. And when it comes to choosing a natural-looking color, go with a tint that makes your cheeks look like you’ve just taken a brisk walk on a cold day. A healthy “glow” is what we are going for here. The 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Blush is made from finely pressed rice powder and color with antioxidant and vitamin-rich fruit, instead of minerals and synthetic dyes.
Insider application tips: Use a blush brush to apply, and remember that just a little bit of color really does go a long way. I love 100% Pure Cruelty Free Blush Brush, as it’s a super-soft brush that’ll pick up an even amount of color. When applying blush, place a little on the apples of your cheeks and buff out and up towards your upper ear, then sweep over with your Kabuki brush to soften any lines.
Best Eco-Beauty Product No. 6: Hynt Beauty DUET Perfecting Concealer
If you deal with under-eye circles (or you have to shoot after a terrible night of sleep and have the dark circles to prove it!), this silicone-free, chemical-free concealer will hide them instantly. In fact, this amazing product can even do double-duty as a light all-over foundation. To use it like that, simply place a few dots along your forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin, and blend in. If you’re not feeling hydrated, I’d opt for the Juice Beauty CC Cream first, followed by the DUET Concealer. A little dab of DUET will melt into the skin for comfortable, all-day wear. The formula is packed skin caring ingredients, such as avocado oil and aloe vera.
Insider application tips: Use the pad of your ring finger and simply tap the product onto your skin to apply. The warmth of your finger tips will help the help blend the product into the skin.
Best Eco-Beauty Product No. 7: EcoBrow
Created by Los Angeles-based makeup artist Marco Ochoa, this mineral pigmented brow wax goes on so smoothly and lasts all day. Even better, particularly for those looking to get fuller brows, this wax is packed with Vitamin E, which is super-conditioning and can help improve the health of the brow hair.
Insider application tips: Using an angled brow brush, lightly dab the brush with the brow wax and fill in the bare spots (lightly at first!), then blend with a spooly.
Best Eco-Beauty Product No. 8 + No. 9: Henné lip mask + Henné lip serum
If you live at altitude like I do here in Boulder, Colo.— or, if you’re simply prone to dry, chapped lips—you’ll want to give your lips a treatment to prep them a week or so before your shoot. Think that sounds like overkill? Think about this: People look at your lips when you speak, so if you’re filming video, it’s especially important to have hydrated lips. I love this mask and serum as a treatment protocol for chronically dry, parched, flaky lips. Nourishing ingredients like sea buckthorn, evening primrose, and argan oil will soothe your lips.
Insider application tips: Use the mask morning and night, and the serum a couple times a day. Gently slough off the dry skin with a damp face cloth using small, circular motions. The Henné treatments will help make this step smooth sailing.
Best Eco-Beauty Product No. 10: Lily Lolo Mascara
In the world of natural mascara, there’s still a little room for improvement. That said, this mascara actually stays put, doesn’t clump, and best of all, doesn’t contain the toxic ingredients (think black coal tar dyes, formaldehyde, synthetic dyes, and more) that most mainstream mascaras are loaded with. It’s great for sensitive eyes, and is also vegan-friendly.
