Products were tested by a panel of Yoga Journal readers and evaluated on efficacy, smell, texture, ease of use, the innovative use of botanical ingredients, and more. To be considered, products could not contain ingredients identified as harmful or potentially harmful per the Environmental Working Groups’ Skin Deep database and shopping tips. This means that products could not contain any of the following:
Aerosol spray
Benzisothiazolinone
Boric acid
Bronopol
Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)
Cetearetj
Coal-tar ingredients, including aminophenol, diaminobenzene, and
phenylenediamine
Diazolidinyl urea
DMDM hydantion
Formaldehyde/formalin
Hydroquinone
Imidzaolidinyl urea
Lead
Loose powder makeup
Mercury (calomel, mercurio, mercurio chloride)
Methylchloroisothiazolinone
Methylisothiazolinone
Microbeads
Oxybenzone
Parabens
PEG/polyethylene glycol
Petroleum distillates
Phthalates, including diethyl phthalate and dibutyl phthalate
Quaternium-15
Resorcinol
Sodium borate
SPF above 50
Toluene
Triclocarban
Triclosan
Unspecified “fragrance”
Vitamin A, retinol, retinyl palmitate, retinoic acid or retinal acetate (in daytime products)
