According to Ayurveda, we want to cultivate the opposite qualities of winter’s chill in our daily meal planning. When it’s cold outside, think “warm and wet” for food choices, such as a warm bowl of soup or hot ginger tea.
My favorite winter foods include: any soups, broths and stews; amaranth; oats (cooked); barley; rye bread; butter; buttermilk; kefir; milk; sour cream; cottage cheese; yogurt (fresh); raw, uncooked honey; maple syrup; molasses; ghee; sesame oil; beets; carrots (not as a juice); leeks; mustard greens; okra; well-cooked onions; parsnips; shallots; acorn squash; winter squash; sweet potatoes; tomatoes; water chestnuts; baked apples; avocados; bananas (ripe); cranberry sauce; dates; oranges; persimmons; pineapple; and spices like cinnamon, clove, and ginger.
