Ayurveda loves herbal teas, which are warming in the winter and cooling in the summer. Typically, Ayurveda-inspired teas are made with basic spices used in cooking, and they all have health-boosting, digestion-enhancing properties. Here are a few of my favorites:
Fennel, Cumin, and Coriander. This is a wonderful digestive support tea, as all of these seeds are carminative (meaning, they reduce gas and bloating). Combine all seeds in boiling water and let simmer for around 20 minutes. Strain and drink.
· 2 tablespoons whole fennel seeds
· 2 tablespoons whole coriander seeds
· 2 tablespoons whole cumin seeds
Hibiscus. I call this beautiful red flower the hot pink wonder. It has the property of reducing inflammation in the body, so it’s a great support for pitta-types with intense emotions and looser stools. I place 1/4 teaspoon of ground hibiscus flower in a steaming cup of almond milk and blend in the Vitamix until smooth and creamy. A hot pink milky tea!
Ginger. Ginger is a powerful digestive herb and a warming support in the cold months. Simply place 1/2 tablespoon of ground fresh ginger in 2 cups of boiling water. Simmer for 20 minutes and drink. You can also place 1/4 teaspoon of dry ginger in water and drink immediately.
