In Ayurveda, we are advised to start each day by drinking lukewarm lemon water, in order to stimulate the gastrointestinal tract and peristalsis (in other words, to keep things moving). Lemons also help loosen ama, or toxins, in the digestive tract. Mixing the juice of half a lemon in a cup of warm water (with an optional pinch of rock salt and 1/2 teaspoon of honey) will also help you metabolize your breakfast, as Valencia Porter, MD, director of integrative medicine at the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in Carlsbad, California, explains in All-Day Ayurveda: Makeover Your Daily Routine.
