This British Hotel Wants You to Try Yoga with Lemurs
Move over goat yoga: As part of hotel Armathwaite Hall’s Meet the Wildlife Wellness Experience in partnership with the neighboring Lake District Wildlife Park (which combines nature with mindful experiences), guests are encouraged to take a yoga class with a troupe of friendly lemurs, who are natural yogis, apparently.
“When you watch lemurs, they do some form of the poses naturally—warming their bellies in the sunshine,” says Richard Robinson, manager of the wildlife park.
Yoga is Fostering Better Relationships Between Police and the Public
A new yoga program in Cleveland is offering yoga, mindfulness, and breathing techniques tailored to the needs of first responders. The program, called Yoga Warriors, helps with mental clarity and relieves anxiety so officers can stay calm in the high-stress situations they routinely face, says instructor Karen Mulcahy.
After attending a full-day introductory class, officers can continue practicing for free at 10 local studios to maximize yoga’s anxiety-busting benefits—both for their own wellness and the community’s, says Detective Chris Gibbons, who helped jumpstart the program. “The main thing is that the interactions between the police and the community are healthy and happy,” says Gibbons. “My hope is in the next phase of this program we can invite the community and police to practice together to help build relationships.”
Meditation Apps May Curb Loneliness
A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that practicing a 20-minute guided meditation on your smartphone may reduce loneliness and increase social interactions. Of the 153 adults who participated in the study, those whose meditations focused on on developing acceptance and awareness reported feeling 22 percent less lonely and having two more social interactions per day.
Meditation for Geeks Album Make Mindfulness Fun For Fantasy Fans
Mindful muggles are turning to a first-of-its-kind 13-track guided meditation album by performing artist and music therapist Rhiannon’s Lark. The album is the result of an experiment at 2017’s GenCon, the largest tabletop and gaming convention in North America, where the artist test-drove a workshop of themed meditations with pop-culture infused story lines and role playing. Among the fantastical exercises is a Harry Potter meditation for confidence and relaxation and a Lord of the Rings meditation with hobbits as models for mindfulness (“Take a moment to observe your hobbit as they celebrate the delight of second breakfast…. See if you can put yourself in the hobbit’s place, embracing this positive moment…”). Other pop culture references include Star Wars, Jim Hanson’s 1982 fantasy The Dark Crystal, and the defunct Nickelodeon cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender—which, as the Times Union points out, given its plot emphasis on the elements of water, earth, fire, and air, is a fitting metaphor for balance.
Yoga Pants Market is Hot and Getting Hotter
A business intelligence report titled “Global Yoga Pants Market Insights, Forecast to 2025” predicts the yoga pants industry to see huge growth in the next five years. Now may be the time to invest in Lululemon—and we don’t mean by buying more pants.
