Every year, beginning in March and April, we go through a process of emptying our metaphorical cup in order to be filled with fresh spring energy. This year, there are two important shifts occurring simultaneously: We welcome the new astrological year as we transition to Aries on March 20—and we move forward in the new astrological era that began last year on December 21 with the great conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter (when the two planets had their closest encounter in nearly 400 years). So, take a deep breath and prepare for new beginnings and necessary endings.

Free yourself from attempts to shape a future that‘s beyond your control. In Buddhism, the limitation of everyday consciousness is known as maya—the illusory nature of the human experience. The new moon in Pisces, on March 13, invites you to not get caught in the maya and to find new ways to let go of any emotions that may be stopping you from taking action with an open, loving heart. The Sun in Pisces, which continues through March 20, teaches us that it’s OK to not know what to do with all the newness we’re experiencing. When we let go of the idea that we should know, we open ourselves to the truth of what we do know. Left-nostril breathing can help you find the stillness to access your next move with heightened discernment.

Aries enters the Sun on March 20, marking the beginning of the astrological New Year. Observe the quality of this shift, which can feel like awakening to a new day from deep sleep. What lights a fire in you during this transition may be revealed during the Libra full moon, on March 28, inviting you to be more present and grounded in the here and now. Since we‘re entering into a new astrological cycle, with the end of the zodiac being Pisces and the beginning being Aries, find a way to harness the full-moon energy to access harmony before springing into new actions.

Key Planetary Dates

March 3: Mars, the planet that represents drive and desire, enters the sign of Gemini, an intellectual sign that represents information gathering and synthesis. Follow your curiosity, but don’t lose focus. However, watch what you say, Mars can cause tempers to flare. Let the yamas brahmacharya (moderation) and ahimsa (non-harming) guide your communication for the rest of the month. On the same day, Mercury meets up with Jupiter in Aquarius. Jupiter invites us to listen to our inner wisdom and intuition, while Mercury rules thinking and reasoning. This meeting in Aquarius may foreshadow change. Allow your inner wisdom to move you into a new future.

March 9-10: The moon will flow through the sign of Aquarius for a few days, inviting us to reflect on how we can re-envision our lives moving forward.  Step away from your electronic devices and focus on the spiritual “technology” held inside your remarkable human heart and gut instead.

March 13: New moon in Pisces: This new moon invites you to be compassionate and accepting towards yourself and others.  However, use discernment and remember your boundaries. Don’t spread yourself too thin by giving too much to others in your life, without first showing yourself the same empathy and kindness.

March 15: Mercury enters Pisces which will help the analytical mind access your intuition and imagination. This can be a good time to start a morning meditation practice to get in touch with your instinctual self.

March 20:  With Saturn in Aquarius trine Mars in Gemini, you’re invited to get physical and move your body. While Saturn can bring tension and Mars can cause inflammatory responses, a trine of these two planets is synonymous with harmony and ease. Do something to get your blood pumping today to boost valuable prana. On this same day, the Sun enters Aries, launching the beginning of the new astrological year. Meditate on what you want to give life to this Spring.

March 22: Venus, the planet of love and connection, enters Aries, the sign of individuality and impulsivity. Our relationships may shift and move in new directions. How can you individuate yourself in the “enmeshed” relationships in your life?

March 24: Venus finds itself cazimi—an aspect that translates as “in the heart of the Sun”—which often brings an end to old negative patterns. Meditate on what areas of your life need new energy and direction.

March 28: There is a full moon in Libra, signifying an invitation to bring some things to balance that maybe reaching extremes. This full moon is opposed by Venus, the planet of beauty, art, and love as well as the asteroid chiron, which can signify our healing gifts and where we need healing. Take a moment today to place a hand on your heart and another on your naval. Take some deep breaths to find harmony within.

March 29: Neptune conjunct Mercury in Pisces creates a cosmic divine energy. Breathe in universal intelligence and allow your thoughts to flow via your favorite contemplative practice or meditation.
