Q&A with NYC Yoga Teacher Kat Fowler: On Holidays and Home

Yoga Journal sat down with Kat Fowler to discuss the holidays, home and essential oils.

Yoga Journal: What do you love about the Holidays?
Kat Fowler:
In two words... home and family. I was privileged to grow up with parents that inspired my own interest in yoga, meditation and eastern spirituality. My parents even met and lived in an ashram! The Holidays are always a chance for us to reconnect in a meaningful way and practice gratitude.

YJ: How important is your home yoga practice?
Home practice is essential if you are serious about challenging yourself. You can slow down, work on a pose, and test your limits on your own schedule. The Holidays are an especially difficult time to make it to the studio. So find a space, roll out your mat, and make time for you.

YJ:How do you incorporate essential oils around the Holiday?
I love my essential oils. For most of the year lavender is my go-to because it is so calming. I’ll use it either in a roll-on or through my diffuser. During the Holidays though, I bring out the stronger seasonal scents; peppermint, eucalyptus, or frankincense. I particularly love a few drops of peppermint oil in my morning shower. It fills my entire home with the joy of the Holidays!

YJ:As we look to 2017, what advice do you have for others recommitting to their yoga practice in the new year?
Set goals that are consistently achievable, and don’t be too hard on yourself. If you know your work or family schedule is intense, don’t aim for a four hour practice every day. It’s the smaller changes that make the biggest difference when practiced consistently. Simply setting the intention of having even just 1 minute of silence or breath awareness or meditation every day at the same time can change your life dramatically... and if that feels achievable, up it to 5 or 10 minutes. It’s the smaller actions, practiced with conscious attention and consistency, that make all the difference.
