Replenish Your Energy at an Island Yoga Retreat in Greece

On a gray, chilly morning, I boarded a small fishing vessel with nine other yogis—all of us carrying residual stress from work and travel—and our sticky mats, which we crammed next to gasoline cans and frayed rope. Just 15 minutes later, after a smooth ride over turquoise Aegean waters, we docked on Silver Island, a private, 6o-acre yoga retreat and working olive farm. The shift in energy was palpable: It is clear the island is a quiet, safe place where your only jobs are to decompress, practice yoga, and eat phenomenal organic, local meals.

After settling in, I visited a meditation platform at a high point on the island that revealed 1oo shades of blue and green. Then it was time for lunch—a juicy salad and frittata made with eggs from chickens foraging nearby. We all sat around one table, sharing stories of life back home, and yoga.

Days on Silver Island are anchored by two yoga classes in an outdoor pavilion. Our guide, Karuna DiLibero, an incredibly warm American Ashtanga and Anusara teacher, is also an Ayurvedic specialist and essential-oil therapist, so I visited her after yoga for a blissful Indian head massage and Ayurvedic facial.

The sun came out on day two, which highlighted the island’s beauty, but also meant warm water: Silver Island is an eco-resort, so hot water is available only via solar water heaters. I indulged in a short shower with eco-friendly products.
