Last year, just a few weeks after chef Parker Bosley announced he was closing his Cleveland restaurant, Parker’s New American Bistro, he learned that the place had won a coveted spot on Gourmet magazine’s list of the 50 best American restaurants. Customers hoped the honor might persuade Bosley not to close. But he was too excited about his new gig: helping local family farmers find fresh outlets for their crops so they can hold on to their land. It’s a change, he says, inspired by his yoga practice.
Five years ago, an employee—worried that Bosley was on the brink of burnout—handed him a yoga video. Bosley was dubious at first. But he took the video home, liked it, and eventually started taking classes with Karen Allgire at Green Tara Yoga in Cleveland Heights.
He’d always worked out, but yoga brought him a sense of vitality and mental clarity that he hadn’t experienced before. “I discovered potential in my body and then confidence in my potential to achieve my next goal,” he says.
Farmers and Ohio consumers are likely to reap the benefits. Now employed by the North Union Farmers Market, Bosley will help farmers extend their seasons, add new products, and become preferred providers to chefs.
“We’re reconnecting the people who cook and eat food with the people who raise it,” Bosley says. “Making these connections helps everybody.”
