The longest relationship we will ever have is the one with ourselves. It’s important that we recognize and nurture this fundamental relationship the same as we would a beloved family member or a friend. One of my favorite activities is envisioning my perfect day—and going on a date with myself.
Simple pleasures are an easy way that we can practice self-care. Reframing self-care as things that are pleasurable, accessible, and enjoyable help us incorporate them into our regular routine. Give yourself a break from the pressures of life, have some fun, and connect with yourself—gift yourself time with yourself. It’s a date!
I have to remind myself from the very moment I wake up that I must prioritize having a nurturing relationship with myself. One way to practice this is to greet yourself first thing in the morning just as you would a loved one. Acknowledge and show yourself some love by gently touching your hand to your heart, or by giving yourself a loving hug.
As a creative, artist, and teacher I am mindful of how my work can benefit others. At the start of my day, I like to practice self affirmations to feel grounded in who I am and to set my intentions. This allows me to be open to inspiration from others without changing how I view myself or my work.
Self-care is about allowing yourself to indulge in simple pleasures. I like to find a new coffee shop I’ve never been to before. No matter what gives you joy, sometimes simply trying something new can delight us in ways that lift us out of a rut, or even support our creative process.
On my perfect day, I love to be in a public space where I am free to turn inward and connect with myself. I usually bring my journal so I can jot down any thoughts or feelings I have. Sometimes I bring my sketch book to practice calligraphy. It’s in these quiet moments that we can tune in and learn from and about ourselves.
As much as I love treating myself to a spa day, sometimes it’s not in my budget. But you don’t need access to a spa to receive the nourishment you need. Spending time outdoors is a great way to relax and feel refreshed. Whenever I look up at the sky and take in the nature all around us, I am reminded that we are all connected to and supported by mother earth.
For me, nothing completes a perfect day more than incorporating a little bit of movement, and gratitude.
At the end of your day, take time to reflect on what went well, and check in with how you feel. Maybe you feel a little lighter, softer, happier. Take a moment to name the things that gave you pleasure, helped you relax, made you smile. This practice of gratitude not only supports a good night’s rest, it sets a supportive tone and intention for welcoming a new day.
