Brand Director

full-time; Boulder, CO

Yoga Journal is seeking a creative, results-oriented Brand Director to lead the content and strategic vision for Yoga Journal. This person will be an industry expert and a visionary leader. The Brand Director will be responsible for the overarching content vision across all YJ channels, including print, .com, online education, social, membership, in-person events, and new product development. Are you eager to apply new media practices to help people find health and happiness, and transform the status quo? If so, then this role could be for you. You’ll be directly responsible for managing the entirety of the brand. You will oversee and scale brand awareness while helping to refine Yoga Journal’s brand standards, editorial direction, and core values.

The ideal candidate will be an innovative thought leader in the wellness space. Someone who knows how to build audience and develop community in a dynamic, evolving market filled with a variety of voices and perspectives. With oversight of the brand’s strategic initiatives and budget, this person keeps the brand financially sustainable while proactively thinking about product development to grow and diversify revenue is key. In addition, we’re looking for someone to create a brand and internal culture that is representative of all voices and people within the yoga industry. You have an eye for raw talent, having built successful teams, and the ability to inspire and corral that talent into a harmonious, productive force.

Core Responsibilities & Objectives:

  • Clearly communicates the brand vision with relevant teams, partners, and clients.
  • Manages the execution of content strategy—from interdepartmental coordination and scheduling to budgeting and workflow.
  • Collaborates with marketing and ad sales on brand messaging, look, and feel, and ideation around sponsored and custom content.
  • Oversight of audience research and analytics to make informed audience-development decisions.
  • Maintains a project manager role when it comes to executing large multi-media and multi-channel programs.
  • Stays attuned to new market trends, events, and new media opportunities.
  • Builds and maintains strategic partner relationships, attends industry events and client meetings with the sales team, and contributes to presentations in meetings.
  • Manages department invoices and monthly expenses.
  • Direct reports and total staff of 10-15 team members.
  • High-level understanding of how to improve relevance of Yoga Journal to our audience and various clients.
  • Understands research, story building, and media metrics.
  • Understands revenue goals and forecasting.
  • Runs efficient and organized weekly meetings with content and marketing staffs.
  • Provides creative direction and helps drive the expression of Yoga Journal.

Essential Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree ideal in journalism, marketing, business administration, or equivalent
  • 7+ years of experience in brand management, editorial and/or media sales and marketing
  • Excellent communicator
  • Creative, enthusiastic, and fun
  • Strong writing and presentation skills
  • Experience with digital media and digital product development
  • Strong interest in yoga and wellness
  • A self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit

Senior Editor

full-time; Boulder, CO

The Senior Editor will be part of a cross-platform editorial team that skillfully assigns, edits, and writes posts for the website and features and columns for the magazine related to asana, yoga philosophy, health and wellness, and fitness trends that intersect yoga. We are looking for someone with national magazine media editing and writing experience who will also feel at home on a small team. The ideal candidate will have a yoga, meditation, and/or mindfulness practice and be passionate about bringing well-written, creatively packaged service to an audience estimated at 10 million touchpoints. It is critical that this person can think through editorial campaigns from digital and social to print, and even into online education and membership programs.

Editorial Responsibilities:

  • Conceive, develop, assign, write and edit articles for the Practice section and feature well.
  • Contribute timely, clickable articles to yogajournal.com on a weekly basis.
  • Collaborate with art department in conceiving art for print departments and features.
  • Scout yoga models, assist art department in organizing photo shoots, and attend photo shoots to spot asana form and insure accuracy of images.
  • Develop and maintain a network of yoga instructors as potential contributors, story sources, and models. Attend networking events in the yoga community and positively represent the brand.
  • Top edit executive editor as needed.
  • Cut-to-fit and proof/line-edit print pages during production.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in journalism or equivalent.
  • Minimum five years’ experience working for a consumer publication.
  • Must have a very serious yoga practice. YTT preferred.
  • Expert in InDesign.
  • The ideal candidate should be organized, able to meet deadlines, and comfortable handling multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Completes assignments and editing of various departments or features in a timely fashion to help facilitate smooth production flow. Handles deadline pressures calmly.

Digital Manager

Yoga Journal is seeking a Digital Manager who will oversee strategy, execution, and business development for digital assets. You’ll share responsibility for driving new business that keeps Yoga Journal at the forefront of the market. Our ideal candidate will have expert digital media knowledge and collaborate effectively across editorial and marketing teams. You will work with editors, sales and marketing staff, digital producers, and clients to imagine and implement best-in-class digital content, products, and services.

This position requires a blend of editorial, marketing, and digital savvy, as well as a collaborative style and proven ability to achieve results when synthesizing efforts from across several functional areas of the company. Success will require versatile command of a hybrid skill set that combines sales, marketing, content strategy, data analysis, database manipulation, and customer service.

Ideally, you’re a digital native and organizational wiz. You’ve demonstrated the ability to think innovatively while also paying attention to detail and delivering results against weekly goals.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement brand digital strategies within budget requirements.
  • Set specific digital audience and assist in revenue goals while monitoring progress.
  • Oversee operations for all digital tools, applications, and new products.

  • Proven results in coordinating programs with daily and weekly requirements and in communicating effectively with both internal and external clients
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills

Designer

full-time; Boulder, CO

Yoga Journal is seeking a well-organized and creative editorial designer with strong typography and design skills to join the Yoga Journal team in Boulder, Colorado. Yoga Journal is a fast-paced environment and the ideal candidate must be deadline-driven and collaborative, as well as detail-oriented. 

This position reports to the Art Director and collaborates closely with all teams to create and assist with visual needs across the brand’s many platforms, in addition to working on design and production of regular print issues and special interest publications. 

Responsibilities:

  • Works with Art Director and other Directors across the brand to conceptualize, research, plan, and execute the visuals and design for magazine, book-a-zines, and digital editions. Designs departments and features as assigned for 6-10 issues/year.
  • Works with Art Director and photo contributors on assigned photo shoots to assist with bookings, producing, styling, and art direction.
  • Reviews and manages Zinio digital editions.
  • Works with an in-house color correction specialist and the Art Director to make sure color is being processed to meet Yoga Journal standards.
  • Manages production and post-production as needed.
  • Help with other projects as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Consumer magazine design/layout design experience, strong production skills, and at least 3+ years as a page layout designer.
  • Familiarity with Adobe CC apps, specifically InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • A degree in graphic design or a related field.
  • Strong print and digital design skills, is a self-starter, and thinks outside the box.
  • Broad knowledge of photography, typography, color correction, and illustration.
  • Is highly organized and deadline driven, with superb project and time-management skills.
  • Works collaboratively with team members both in the office and around the country.
  • Has a solid understanding of the yoga community and lifestyle–200+hours of completed teacher training a plus, but not a requirement.
