Why should grownup yogis have all the fashion fun? Athleisure wear companies and entrepreneurial apparel designers are fast recognizing and responding to outfitting needs of the growing numbers of kids and teens who practice too. For the inspiration behind some of this season’s most fashion-forward kids yoga looks, we talked with the companies and brands driving the trends.
The Canadian-based design team visits regularly with its girl customers for feedback on their line and what’s trending in their world, says design manager, Natalie Martz. Incorporating such input, this season’s looks include strappy bras, looser and lighter tanks, ventilation for the warmer months and outfits that transition well throughout the day, says Martz.
The team’s creative fun comes into play with graphics, she says. “Myself, and other graphic designers went to New York last year, to art galleries and we saw beautiful, 4-D photography. This resonated with our girls. We built this depth into our graphics for the season.”
They favor color in bright pops with a neutral undertone, she says. Think corals mixed with a light blue or light teal.
Function is integral as well. “It’s important to have outfits that layer well, snap up, and are super soft inside with pockets to throw stuff like a phone, lip gloss or hair pins in,” says Martz. Instagram yogipreneur, Kristine Deer’s Kids line, has been driven by the women and moms who have fallen in love with her brand. “When a mother feels proud of what she wears, she wants to share it with her child as an extension of her. It’s a mini-me situation,” says Deer.
Known for fun, vibrant prints, they’ve paid attention to the fashion shows for Spring, noting trends in prints and color, she says. “We like to take it further and make it ours. We stay attuned to pop culture, music and what artists and styles are trending, too.”
For kids, “An investment with K-Deer is a good choice. Our leggings wear so well and wash beautifully,” says Deer. “They’re easily paired with tops and jackets already in her closet.”
Driving this season’s collection is a combination of primary colors like black, white and pops of red, blue, and yellow. “We’re making a nice bold statement with these prints. We have nine different print options, too – each with a different vibe,” says Deer. “There’s our classic Boho, Empire, Tribeca and new Flex, Vibe, Victory, Crush, Fierce and Famous styles. The prints truly reflect the power of what the fitness industry is doing now. There’s a total shift in wellness. We’re trying to plant our seed – of how powerful and culturally driven and connected we are to fashion and what’s happening in fitness.”

The footwear company added their Kids Yoga Sling slide into their collection last year due to the incredible momentum in women’s Sandals, says Trisha Hegg, vice president of global product for Sanuk.
The popular and trendy-chic slide features footbeds made from real yoga mats. Hegg says “it’s a slow recovery memory foam that instantly molds to the shape of the foot and rebounds after use. It provides long-lasting comfort and style.”
The brand is known for kitschy prints and bright colors. For Spring, 2016, “we tried to take down at least one print from mom to daughter, but featured kid-friendly animal prints, floral and stripes too, in pop colors,” says Hegg.

Surrounded by the ocean, beautiful mountains and canyons in Malibu, California, every line created by this husband and wife team is filtered through that lens, says co-founder, Kalen Allmandinger.
“We think of it as desert meets ocean,” he says of the 100% cotton and hemp/organic cotton blended kids’ apparel line.
This season, the couple pays homage to spring itself, he says. “We get rain during the winter here, which turns the brown hillsides green and brings vibrant and fragrant blooms. We’re also surrounded by hummingbirds, which have vibrant accents of color amid muted, natural tones, so you can expect to see us play with prints of birds and feathers, and, as always, incorporate tasty and fun pops of color among natural tones,” says Allmandinger.
Unisex harem pants are among the brand’s most popular styles, as well as a long tunic, inspired by the light, long garments found in the Middle East and Africa, says Allmandinger. “They do particularly well with kids, I think, because they are stylish and practical. The generous crotch can easily accommodate diapers and expand with the rapidly growing child. They look great rolled up or as capris, too.”
