August’s Full Moon Is Also a Blue Moon—And Its Rise Ushers in a Time of Change

The full moon in Aquarius on August 22 urges you to open your heart, release what's not serving you, and welcome newness into your life. These yoga poses will guide you through it.

As we leave fiery Leo season to enter earthly Virgo, there are some intense astrological events in the air. The Aquarius full moon hits us on August 22—and it’s not just a full moon; it’s a blue moon, too. This rare phenomenon occurs when an extra full moon lands within a certain time period—in this case, the summer season—and brings with it a powerful energy. Now is the time to embrace change, let go of what’s no longer serving you, and reach for your dreams—however lofty they may be.

At the same time, astrologically, Uranus is going retrograde, which essentially means that the planet will appear to be moving backward; when it does this, you are being reminded to release the old, welcome the new, go with the flow, and stay true to yourself. You may have already felt the beginning of a radical shift in your life. If so, how can you start thinking differently about the changes that are on the horizon?

The beautiful thing about change is remembering that what is for you won’t go past you. Yes, it can be hard, but yogis know that a good flow can open your heart and allow the release of what isn’t yours anymore, and welcoming newness into your life.

Embrace change with this full moon yoga practice

This full moon yoga practice will encourage you to meditate on what it is that you want, open your heart to the changes coming your way, and remind you to stay rooted in yourself and grounded in your beliefs. Take these poses at your own pace, spending as much time as you need on each pose.

Sukhasana (Easy Pose)

Starting out in Easy Pose may seem, well, easy. However, this pose is meant for you to pause and reflect. Change is anything but easy, so taking some time to be present will invite you to embrace the shifts coming into your life.

Practice it:

Grab a blanket or towel and fold it to create some support underneath you. Sit on the edge. Cross your shins and widen your knees, with each foot between the opposite knee. If your legs look like a triangle, you know you are doing it right. Rest your hands on your knees, palms facing up to receive energy or facing down to feel more grounded. Take some deep breaths. Stay here as long as you need.

Tadasana (Mountain Pose)

Mountain Pose is a great reminder to stay grounded, even as your life (and the world) shifts around you. During Virgo season, you may find yourself returning to Mountain Pose often because you connect the soles of your feet to the earth, generating a grounded, stable feeling. Amidst the chaos happening astrologically, in Mountain, you can find time to be present and stable.

Practice it:

Stand firmly with your big toes touching and your heels slightly apart. Lift your chest and roll those shoulders back, palms facing forward. Tuck your chin and lengthen the crown of your head upward. Now that you’re here, stay awhile. Take deep breaths until you feel a little more present.

Virasana (Hero’s Pose)

Making your way back down on your mat, it’s time to embrace your inner light with Hero’s Pose. This pose gives you time to relax and collect yourself. Part of dealing with change is not fighting it, and instead allowing everything to unfold exactly as it’s meant to—Hero’s Pose can help with that.

Practice it:

Sit on your hands and knees, bringing your inner knees together and take your feet slightly wider than your hips. Sit back, but lean your torso forward. Reach your hands to the back of your knees and draw your calf muscles toward your heels. Sit down between your feet (you can use a block here if needed). Lengthen through the crown of your head and rest your hands on your thighs or bring them to prayer at heart center. Stay here as long as you need.

Vrksasana (Tree Pose)

Tree Pose is the perfect asana to make you feel grounded and connected with the earth. Take a cue from Ferris Bueller, and remember that “life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you might miss it.” Connect with yourself and stay present in Tree Pose, which can prepare you for the inevitable shifts happening in your life.

Practice it:

Rise to Mountain Pose. From here, you can start to move into Tree by shifting your weight over to one foot. When you’re ready, lift your foot into the air, grab it with your hand, and gently place it on your leg, wherever is most comfortable (but not directly on the knee!). Bring your hands together in prayer at heart center and breathe. Switch feet when you are ready.

Cobra Pose

Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)

Cobra Pose encourages you to open your heart. When our life changes (even for the better) it can be really hard to let go of the things—and the people—we once held so dear. This blue moon is inviting you to release the old and find what fills your heart, and Cobra Pose can facilitate that openness.

Practice it:

Lie down on your belly and stretch your legs back, pressing the tops of your feet on the floor. Your thighs should also be pressed on the floor, and spread your hands to the floor under your shoulders. Then, hug your elbows into your body. When you inhale, straighten your arms and lift your chest towards the sky. Go only as high as your body feels comfortable and be careful not to push your ribcage forward. Breathe here for at least 30 seconds, and repeat the pose if you’d like.
