There have been many miraculous healing stories about people who have used yoga to recover from a trauma. Most discovered yoga for the first time in the process of dealing with their injuries. Yoga therapist Matthew Taylor, M.P.T., R.Y.T., gives this general advice: Turn to your physical therapist as your partner in healing. The therapist has knowledge of how the physical condition is progressing and what to expect, as well as expertise in medical techniques and treatments, which can complement the internal body knowledge you’ve gained as a result of practicing yoga. Working together, you can create an environment in which your innate healer can be facilitated, says Taylor. Sharing yoga knowledge with a physical therapist means that basic postures can be explored, in turn creating adaptations and modifications using props.
