Yoga Journal (www.yogajournal.com), the most widely read yoga magazine in the country, has just won its 6th “Folio Editorial Excellence Award” in the category of Consumer Health/Fitness. This award, given by Folio Magazine, recognizes magazines that attain excellence in their editorial content and design. This year’s silver and bronze winners were Self and Health. “
What an honor to receive this award,” says Kaitlin Quistgaard, Yoga Journal’s Editor-in-Chief. “Our talented editorial and design teams, with the help of some great writers and amazing yoga teachers, go all out to make the most inspiring, instructive, and beautiful magazine about yoga. This award shows that our peers recognize we’re delivering on that promise.”
“Yoga has become an increasingly important part of our culture,” says Bill Harper,Yoga Journal’s Publisher. “The yoga business across all sectors — including clothes, videos, classes and equipment — is thriving. In these particularly stressful times, many new people come to yoga, while those who have an established practice are doing it more frequently.
Recent data is evident of this trend. According to the 2008 Spring Mediamark Research Inc. (MRI), yoga continues to be the fastest growing sport in America, with over one million practitioners starting in the last year alone. According to Yoga Journal’s 2008 “Yoga in America” survey, 15.8 million Americans practice yoga while spending nearly $6 billion a year on classes, products, clothing, vacations, and media. This figure represents an increase of 87 percent compared to the previous 2004 study.
The “Folio Editorial Excellence Award” is one of several major awards Yoga Journal has won in recent years including five Maggie Awards for “Best Health, Beauty and Fitness” Magazine, and in 2007, the Maggie’s top award for “Best Overall Consumer Publication.” Yogajournal.com was also the 2008 Webby Award Finalist for “Best Magazine Website”.
