Ashtanga yoga teacher, Richard Freeman may have inspired many to take up the practice just through his graceful presence on his popular videos.
Richard Freeman is one of the foremost teachers of Ashtanga Yoga in the tradition of Pattabhi Jois. His graceful presence in his videos, Yoga with Richard Freeman, an in-depth study of the Primary Series, and Yoga Breathing and Relaxation, have inspired many people to take up Ashtanga.
Freeman spent nine years in Asia studying a variety of spiritual traditions and traveled as a sadhu (holy person), so his teachings have a strong philosophical grounding. His teaching is influenced by Iyengar, Viniyoga, vipassana, Zen, and Sufism. Freeman is director of the Yoga Workshop in Boulder, Colorado, and is the author of the yoga philosophy book The Mirror of Yoga.
Richard says, “This is an exciting time because there is great potential for reframing the internal teachings into a contemporary context. But there is even a greater potential for turning yoga into a farce by stopping our inquiry, thinking we have comprehended things that are subtle and deep, or by feeding our narcissistic obsession with self-promotion.”
