D.C.-area yogis, head to the Smithsonian Institution this month for an educational weekend exploring yoga’s holistic healing power.
Want to learn the latest in how our beloved practice heals? Linda Stern Lang, director of Therapeutic Yoga of Greater Washington, is organizing a one-of-a-kind weekend conference at the Smithsonian Institution exploring the latest research on yoga’s therapeutic applications for modern medicine. Experts including Loren Fishman, Judith Hanson Lasater, and Sat Bir Khalsa will discuss their research, experience, and evidenced-based practices for pain management, healthy aging, disease, treatment of diseases, psychiatry and neuroscience, as well as in education and social services.
The first day of the conference will explore research-backed practices that you can integrate into your daily life—or offer your students. You’ll be able to find your perfect “yoga prescription” for prevention and rehabilitation of conditions, such as scoliosis, arthritis, PTSD, among many others. Day Two allows you to dive into what interests you the most with specialized intensives. The classes led by masters in their field range from yoga for musculo-skeletal conditions or arthritis, restorative yoga, yoga methods for stress, Alzheimer’s prevention, and many others. Optional lunchtime roundtables will be led by specialists in medical and mental health, rehabilitation, addiction recovery, and meditation and stress reduction with limited seating for an additional $25, so plan ahead.
“[Attendees] may come face-to-face with their own loving presence, which is after all, the heart of the practice which brings us back again and again and again,” Lang says. “Someone who has yet to develop a deeper sense of the scope of yogic practices, might levitate after the second day of intensives. Their feet may never touch the ground in the same way.”
