School offers MA in Yoga Studies

Loyola Marymount University launches a two-year masters degree program in Yoga Studies.

There’s good news for yogis who just can’t seem to quench their thirst for knowledge about yoga. Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles has launched its two-year Master of Arts degree program in Yoga Studies, the first of its kind in the United States. The fall semester beg

It’s important to note that the program isn’t about perfecting your Downward-Facing Dog Pose; it takes an academic approach to the practice. Spanning 36 credit hours and costing approximately $18,000 a year, the program comprises studies in Sanskrit, the anatomy and physiology of yoga asana, and even traveling to India to learn more about the practice’s native culture firsthand.

“Over 20 million Americans [are] practicing yoga on a regular basis,” the program’s coordinator Christopher Chapple told Southern California Public Radio. “That’s more than Methodists and Presbyterians combined. So I don’t think [the practice is] really anything that’s too wild and wacky anymore.” Chapple said that there’s a need for more people deeply educated about the tradition who can teach yoga teachers.

In addition to the MA degree, graduates of the program will be eligible for their 500-hour Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) credential from Yoga Alliance. Loyola Marymount also offers programs in yoga therapy and yoga philosophy, as well as teacher trainings.
