Twists get a bad rap when it comes to back pain. While caution should always be used if you have chronic pain, many twisting yoga poses help relieve back pain—when done properly. That’s because the discs of the spine need to imbibe, or absorb spinal fluid, to receive nutrients and develop separation from the other disks for better range of motion, and light twists can assist in that process.
