Benjamin Sears: How He Found Yoga + What Keeps Him Practicing
Benjamin Sears of LUXYOGA shares how he found yoga, and continues to discover and rediscover his body and mind through the practice. We sat down with Benjamin and asked him a few questions about his practice, and how he gets rid of negative self talk. Join Benjamin for week two of our DAILY PRACTICE CHALLENGE in honor of National Yoga Month in September.
YOGA JOURNAL: How do you become aware of, and abandon the negative self talk? What are three strong tips you use to get over it?
Benjamin Sears: Abandon is a strong word. I’m still in the awareness stage, working on creating new patterns. You get good at what you practice and I catch myself practicing being a real jerk to myself sometimes. Here are three things that help me:
1) In practice, I set an intention when I start. It may be physical, like: maintain awareness of and breathe into a spot in my body for the whole practice, or psychological: commit to using a good quality that you have throughout a practice, or simply breathe an energy that you actually want in your life into your cell tissue. If the nasty voice starts talking, use the intention you set, not to ignore but to process the upheaval. Focus on the intention instead.
2) Take action; if there’s too much on your plate, start small.
3) Schedule time for rest and recovery – basically anything that gets you away from your phone. For me getting outside is crucial.
YJ: What keeps you practicing yoga?
BS: The rare and total, yet indescribable, moments of feeling completely at peace. And progress.
YJ: What’s one thing you can tell people who don’t have a strong home practice, or practice at all, to inspire and motivate them to get into yoga?
BS: Yoga is a tool to build a happier life. You don’t have to be good at it — whatever you think that means. It’s the one place where process matters more than outcome, where the type of effort you put in is what counts.
