One of the ways San Francisco vinyasa teacher Janet Stone has created a fun, joyful environment for her vigorous flow classes is through a playful mix of songs that aim to lull yogis into a more balanced place. The lyrics may be edgy, even forlorn, and the beat can get a little funky, but the music is sure to carry you through a peaceful, flowing practice that’s at the heart of vinyasa.
“A song doesn’t always have to be uplifting and happy,”she says. “It just has to be moving.” After all, it’s the tone of music—the energy—that speaks to yogis, not just the lyrics, she says.
