Reclaiming and Renaming Self Care: A Conversation With Dr. Stephanie Evans
Join us for a live conversation with Dr. Stephanie Evans, author of Black Women's Yoga History, on June 15 at 1 p.m. EST (10 a.m. PST).
In her new book Black Women’s Yoga History: Memoirs of Inner Peace, Dr. Stephanie Evans reveals a wealth of wisdom about how Black women have managed to find personal pathways to self care—and it wasn’t all brunches and bubble baths.
Join Dr. Evans and YJ Senior Editor Tamara Jeffries as they discuss how self care has become a $10 billion business, offering women books, products, and experiences that promise some form of support in the name of self care—and how women are learning that striving for self care can lead to even more stress. The book highlights lessons learned from women like Rosa Parks, Rita Marley, Maya Angelou, and others who understood what author Audre Lorde wrote: “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation.” They will discuss the role that yoga and mindfulness practices have played in helping Black women find pathways to authentic self care.
Stephanie Y. Evans, PhD is a professor of Black Women’s Studies and director of the Institute for Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Georgia State University. She is the author of several books and publications about Black women’s wellness.
