School may have been out for the summer, but teens in St. Petersburg, FL, were hard at work, pursuing personal development—on their mats. The Live Be Yoga team joined yoga teacher Clayton Sizemore for a class with Urban Yoga Foundation. This New York City-based organization, founded by Ghylian Bell, offers programs for underserved African-American youth. Through lessons in positive language, yoga poses, breathwork, and mindfulness techniques, the teens learn a roadmap to cultivate integrity, character, and creative self-expression. The idea is for these infectious learnings to spread throughout urban communities. “When you can calm yourself down, you can calm other people down,” says Sizemore. Here, Jeremy and Aris get a firsthand look at how it happens.
